Frogs in the Garden Pond

Common Frogs (Rana temporaria) were very active in the garden pond again this morning with several more clumps of spawn added. I estimated up to around 10 frogs.

A few photos

I've taken better photos in the past using a tripod with the Olympus and 70-300 lens but its a precarious business trying to manoeuvre a tripod and camera from the rockery!

Leaking pipe hopefully is now fixed so Easter baking is back on track :)

  1. Good to see that the frogs are finally getting on with things! The Hot Cross Buns look rather tasty as well :-)

Hope Easter went well, and that you had a lovely time :-)

    1. Thanks very much David. Frogs are still spawning and no sign of the heron! :)

Quiet Easter tend not to go out over bank holidays as it gets so busy everywhere but plenty of nice things to eat at home :) Hope you had a lovely Easter too :)

  2. Hi, hope you had a nice few days, been all over while the weather was nice, and egg rolling on Saturday up in North Yorkshire, weather not good for photo's. My dogs not well, vet visits and a lot of TLC.
I love to see the frogs in your Pond and hope the Heron doesn't start pinching them. Have been up dating all my blog lists ( well trying ) and hope to get another three books up this week.

    1. Thanks Amanda. So sorry to hear your dog is poorly - hope he's a lot better soon. Its very distressing when they are unwell.
Glad to hear you've managed to get out - the egg rolling sounds fun :)
No sign again of the heron. Will look out for the books on your blog - looking forward to seeing them :) I must put up some photos of the bee one I mentioned recently. The church book is excellent and was a real bargain. May be going out Thursday with a friend - it will be a NT property.

  3. Lovely photos of the frogs. I wish I was able to encourage them here (they haven't found my small or large pond). I just don't see them around.

    1. Thanks Wendy. To be honest we were given some frogspawn initially from people who had a pond and lived next door to my mum and dad. But this was over 30 years ago and these days the practice is not recommended in case you bring disease or unwanted plants to your pond.

Common newts did move in eventually of their own accord so hopefully you may get frogs one day. Do hope you do.

The one thing we would love is Sticklebacks but I've never been able to find a place that sells them and I wouldn't collect them from the wild.

  4. Pleased to find your latest blog covering the wildlife in your garden. Good photos of the frogs busy mating and expect you will have many more next generation frogs to populate the garden.
